Madam Wang stared intently at Nanny Wei’s expression. Seeing her eyes filled with horror but not overwhelming shock, Madam Wang’s pupils suddenly contracted.

"Does the wet nurse know or not?" Madam Wang immediately asked.

Nanny Wei snapped back to reality, her lips moving, "K-know what?"

Madam Wang glanced at her hand trembling uncontrollably on the bright red peony quilt, her voice growing sharper, "Wet nurse, stop pretending. Since she could silently sneak into my room and do such things to me, how could she not know that you’re my confidante?"

Nanny Wei felt a bitterness in her heart, "Madam..."

"Do you know what she’s been saying? She knows everything. She’s convinced that her mother’s death was my doing. She wants revenge, she wants to destroy everything I own. Even my family, the downfall of the Wang Family, she says is her doing." Madam Wang was somewhat agitated, "Long ago, she was already watching me, already working against us. Everything is within her grasp, which is why we’ve been so unfortunate in everything we do."

Nanny Wei opened her mouth, offering no defense. Had it not been for the previous events, she might have thought Madam Wang was being overly dramatic, but having been through being threatened by that person, she believed everything now.

With someone like that, what couldn’t she accomplish or do?

"Madam, I..."

"Has she approached you too?" Madam Wang stared at her and asked.

"Madam..."

"Don’t brush me off with words. Such coincidences do not happen. How is it that you suddenly fell ill right after that twist of your ankle? Wet nurse, I grew up drinking your milk since birth. You’ve been with me for over thirty years. In truth, you’re closer to me than my legitimate mother. They say ’nurse is mother,’ and for you, wet nurse, how are you any different from my real mother?"

Nanny Wei was moved to tears by her words.

"That girl has already come after me. Wet nurse, you’re one of mine; how can you escape? Tell me, what does she want you to do?" Madam Wang fixed her eyes on Nanny Wei’s expression, "Is she asking you to join her against me?"

"Madam..." Nanny Wei cried out in shock, her heart chilled, her mind clearing somewhat, "Madam, you’re not wrong. Her people have indeed approached me!"

Madam Wang’s eyes narrowed sharply.

"Madam, they know everything. I tried to cover it up, tried to take the blame on myself, but they cut off Wei Da’s fingers," Nanny Wei cried.

"So you pushed it all onto me?" Madam Wang’s voice reached a high pitch as she stood up abruptly.

"I did no such thing. They don’t believe me at all. They know everything," Nanny Wei said, "I don’t know how they found out, but they really have..."

Madam Wang’s legs gave way, and she collapsed onto the stool.

"Then what?" Madam Wang said, "What do they want you to do?"

Nanny Wei shook her head.

"Wet nurse!" Madam Wang shrieked, "You’ve been with me for over thirty years, closer to me than my real mother. Are you truly going to join them against me?"

"Madam, how could I? I would never!" Nanny Wei hurriedly denied.

"Then why didn’t you come to tell me sooner?" Madam Wang shouted sharply, "If she hadn’t come as she did, if I hadn’t been alert, would I have been betrayed by you, none the wiser?"

If not, why didn’t she report when the others approached her, instead waiting until now when Madam Wang thought of it herself, and she still hadn’t reported it?

"Madam, I would never!" Nanny Wei hastened to pledge her loyalty.
