Chapter 182 Guardian Spirit
Night, garden, half-bloomed wild roses, cicadas chirping.
Swish.
A small figure descended from the sky, rolled over, glanced quickly, and then disappeared into a gap in the bushes.
The cicadas quieted down.
silence.
call.
call! ! !
Swish!
The witch hunter was reduced to a black silhouette, like a ghost, in the golden light gleaming on the blade.
Tap, tap, tap.
Boots clattered on the floor, and one, two, three, four people entered the garden. The vulture silently gestured to the three bird-beaked figures, instructing them to scatter and search.
The garden wasn't large, and the torchlight illuminated the entire area. Baldy walked up to the nude statue of the Rose Saint and gazed at the beautiful woman sculpted from white stone.
Night-blooming roses climbed her delicate skin, becoming her garments. The bald man lit the plaque at the base of the statue with a torch; it was inscribed in the words of an ancient sage:
"GLORIA CAIN. GRATIA ROSIS."
"Glory belongs to Kane, grace to the rose."
The vulture silently recited the prayer, raised its head, and looked at the statue's plump body.
The man wrinkled his nose in disgust. The decadent and licentious atmosphere of the Rose Kingdom made the conservative and frugal witch hunters of the old kingdom feel nauseous.
Suddenly, a rustling sound came from the perimeter of the garden.
The vulture instantly became alert, switching its longsword to a single-handed grip, picking up a crossbow with the other, leaning against the statue, and preparing for battle.
The bird-beaked man closest to the sound drew his short sword, held a torch in one hand, and approached the source of the sound.
One step, two steps, three steps.
He walked to a flower bush, lit it with a torch, and then thrust his sword into it!
"squeak!"
A huge rat darted out from the flowerbed, startling the man. He blurted out, "Fuck you, Buck!"
The three men on guard in other corners of the garden simultaneously turned their gaze to the spot where the rat had scurried out. Just then, seemingly out of nowhere, several bowstring twangs rang out in unison. Before the cursing bird-beaked man could react, three crossbow bolts were embedded in his back, and he groaned as he fell into the flower bushes.
"Kill the peacock!"
With a loud roar, several figures rushed out from the four entrances of the garden, their ice blades gleaming coldly in the moonlight!
Hey, you think you're so tough? Let the Rat King's men play with you.
Taking advantage of the clash of swords and the battle between the two groups, Gebu quietly slipped away, jumped onto the hedge, and ran to the edge of the garden in a few steps.
As the halfling looked up, the big-eyed bat carrying the dimensional bag landed right in his hand.
Welcome back, my darling.
You can lose anything, but you can't lose your books.
Geb listened to the clanging of metal in the garden, unsure of who had won or lost. He then had Big Eyes fly higher, using his synesthesia to scan the entire area.
Besides the two groups fighting in the center of the maze, there were two other groups moving around inside. The first group consisted of a peacock and four mercenaries wearing bird beaks, standing near the entrance. The second group consisted of two individuals, one tall and one short, who were wandering around the maze like headless flies.
Who is it that has so much free time to wander around the maze at this hour? — Could it be a young couple doing *that*?
Wait, that big guy looks familiar...—isn't that short guy carrying a lute on his back?
That's not Yvette and Goliath, is it?!
Gebu quickly ended the synesthesia and took a shortcut, jumping down onto the heads of the two people.
The large orc huffed and puffed as he followed the half-elf, a dull smile on his face, like a bulldog being let out for a walk, without asking where they were going.
"Over here, big guy, hurry up, we're going to miss it!"
"Hehe, killing the chicken!" the big guy shouted with a silly grin.
"It's not a chicken, it's a peacock!" the half-elf retorted.
As they ran, a voice suddenly came from above their heads.
"Where are you running to!"
"May the Queen of Raven protect you!" Yvette exclaimed. Looking up, she saw Geb squatting on the tree wall like a monkey, staring at her with a pair of golden eyes.
"I was wondering where you'd run off to!" Gebu gestured to the half-elf. "The peacock's over here, come with me!"
"Where is Sister Dove?" Yvette asked.
"Taking a bath!"
"Huh?!" The half-elf looked completely bewildered.
"Come with me quickly!" Gebu didn't have time to explain to the two of them. With a wave of his hand, he led them away from above towards the peacock.
The Holy Slash!!!
The longsword cleaved through the air in a golden arc, and the assassin wearing the rat mask raised his small round shield to block. A cracking sound followed by a scream!
Shield, arm, sternum, lung, spine, all were cleaved in the dazzling light—no, they should be said to have been smashed in two by the immense force, the wounds charred black.
The Vulture Witch Hunter kicked the enemy's corpse to the ground, then used his sword to force aside the enemy on the other side—upon closer inspection, he saw that the remaining two beaked mercenaries had been stabbed into bloody gourds, twitching on the ground, and soon died.
The rat-faced killers, covered in blood, cornered the vulture in a corner of the garden.
Ten against one.
"This isn't Peacock—where's that bitch?" The lead assassin bared his pale teeth and said viciously to the bald man.
"A peacock?" The vulture looked puzzled for a moment.
"I never imagined that old bitch and the witch hunter were having an affair—too bad we're not witches, the methods your church's lackeys use to torture and kill lonely old women are useless against us." The rat-faced man said fiercely, but hesitated as he looked at the glowing longsword in the man's hand.
"You're not going anywhere—hand over the peacock!" the rat-faced man said through gritted teeth.
"Are you lying in ambush on the peacock? Who do you work for?"
"—Kill him!"
Before the words were even finished, two rat-faced assassins stepped forward together, one wielding a long-handled axe and the other a sword and shield. The two worked together, with the sword-and-shield man in front and the long-handled axe man behind him slashing down from above, aiming to chop down on the witch hunter's head!
"AngelusCustos!"
'
Guardian Spirits!
A booming roar resounded from the vulture's throat, and divine power erupted from its body with the flow of air. A golden phantom was projected from the man's body!
The phantom unleashed a powerful force field. When the long-handled axe struck the phantom, it was as if it had struck a suit of steel armor. The axe blade shattered instantly, the man's hand went numb, and he let go, the axe falling to the ground.
The sword-and-shield man thrust his shield forward, not anticipating the Guardian Spirit's counterforce. The shield strapped to his arm was pushed aside by the recoil, and with a snap, his forearm was broken at a right angle at the elbow!
"My arm!!"
The man let out a scream, but the witch hunter didn't give him a chance to say a second word. He thrust his sword into the man's exposed chest!
The longsword pierced through their chests, passing through both men, and emerged from the back of the axe-wielding assassin.
The vulture, pressing its foot against the first man's chest, withdrew its longsword and assumed an attacking stance, leveling its shoulders. The golden afterimage made the man's figure appear incredibly imposing, as if possessed by a holy spirit!
"I have nowhere to go? No. It's you who have nowhere to go!"
The witch hunter vulture charged into the stunned crowd!
Beneath that statue, the inscription reads, "Do not question."
