Chapter 36 The Angel of Slaughter
Chapter 36 The Angel of Slaughter
After running more than 500 meters, Simon pushed Klein and Badal into the bushes.
"Back to camp, move Professor Loris and the rest of the people to the bottom of that slope on the west side, find a recess in the rock wall to hide in, and don't come out no matter what noise you hear."
Klein frowned and grabbed his sleeve: "And what about you? You insist on going to join those monsters?"
"I need to go see." Simon pried open his fingers. "Even the Reanimated Physician couldn't defeat that monster. The Empire will resort to new methods, and I need to know what they'll do next."
"Be careful..." Klein stared at him for two seconds, then silently looked away and let him pass.
He turned and ran eastward toward the scorched forest, his figure disappearing into the mist behind him, along with Klein and Badar.
He looked around and found a tall, ancient tree with a thick trunk, bark covered with mycelium and moss, and sturdy branches.
He carried the harpoon on his back, hugged the tree trunk with both hands, and climbed up section by section, stepping on the cracks in the dry bark. His body felt very light after the blessing, and the strength in his arms and legs was much stronger than before. He climbed to the top of the tree, found a thick horizontal branch, sat on it, and leaned against the trunk. From there, he could see most of the eastern forest area.
Even as they were leaving, his hearing picked up on new information: the reanimated healers were taking heavy steps away from the battlefield.
The word "retreat" doesn't exist in the dictionary of Legion warriors; they only know "orders." This means that another new weapon of mass destruction is about to arrive on the battlefield.
"Could you please stay away from that guy... I'm scared." Brienne murmured weakly from inside the birdcage, a far cry from her maniacal laughter when she was watching the show.
"We're safe here," Simon added, "temporarily."
A fearsome monster, the Hungry Angel, hovered above a clearing in the distance, its six wings spread and slowly flapping, its grayish-white skin gleaming coldly in the sunlight.
"They're here, the Imperial armored forces." Simon heard the approaching roar.
It was the sound of large, multi-cylinder engines, fuel exploding in the cylinders. The roar grew closer, the ground trembled slightly, and the prey and fungal carcasses hidden in the forest scattered and fled.
From the gaps in the tree canopy, a black silhouette rose from the east. The thing was launched into the air from the ground, reaching a height exceeding the tree canopy. It hovered briefly in the air before crashing down towards the direction of the Hungry Angel.
Simon could see it clearly.
It was a heavy, dark black machine gun.
It is over four meters tall, with an inverted trapezoidal torso and broad shoulder armor, resembling two iron doors.
The breastplate was curved and had a huge imperial emblem cast on it, covering almost the entire chest.
The emblem's edges were inlaid with bronze rivets, which gleamed dimly in the morning light. The armor plates were not ordinary steel plates, but forged composite armor with hammer marks left by forging on the surface, like ancient armor. Thick hydraulic rods and copper pipes were exposed at the joints, and steam hissed out from the gaps.
It has no head; above its torso is a flat platform with several sensors welded on it.
Instead of a hand, the left arm ends in three thick, long spikes, each half a meter long, with hydraulic devices at the base that allow them to extend and retract, gleaming with a cold, silvery light in the morning light.
The right arm is a six-barreled rotary cannon with a long barrel that is fixed together with a metal band. The ammunition belt hangs down from the rear of the cannon and is pulled into a drum-shaped ammunition box.
There are three ejection nozzles on its back, four in total, arranged in a square. The edges of the nozzles show signs of burning. On each side of its waist hangs a huge fuel tank, covered with a heat insulation layer and secured with iron chains.
The angel of death.
Simon recognized it; it was a failed product from the Imperial Great Expedition, a forbidden weapon sealed away for over a decade.
It fell from the sky and crashed twenty meters in front of the Hungry Angel.
The ground shook violently, creating a large crater, and mud splashed up more than ten meters high.
The mech's legs are reverse-jointed, with knees bent backward and wide feet with four toes, each toe acting as a ground spike, deeply embedded in the soil to stabilize its body. The machine gun on its right arm begins to rotate.
The Hungry Angel lowered its head, looking at the mecha, its emerald eyes narrowing slightly as it sensed a threat.
The angel of death has opened fire.
The six-barreled machine gun spewed flames simultaneously, and spent cartridge cases flew out of the ejection port, clattering and tinkling as they landed on the ground.
The heavy-duty bullet struck the hungry angel's chest like a chain of fire, tearing apart the blooming flowers and sending petals and bits of flesh flying everywhere.
The hungry angel's body was propelled backward by the impact of the bullet, its wings spread to maintain balance, and its claws plowed two deep furrows in the ground.
But it did not fall. The wound on its chest began to heal the instant the bullet stopped. New flesh grew from the bullet hole, and petals sprouted wildly from the edge of the scar, even faster than before.
The hungry angel opened its mouth and let out a piercing screech.
With a powerful flap of its wings and a forward lean, it lunged at the angel of death, its four arms outstretched simultaneously…
The Angel of Death showed no intention of dodging; the hydraulic system hissed, and three spikes on its left arm instantly sprang out!
The two monsters collided violently!
The spike pierced the hungry angel's side, penetrating its grayish-white skin and emerging from its back, with dark red blood flowing down the spike.
The Hungry Angel's arms simultaneously gripped the Death Angel's torso, bone spikes wedged into the gaps in the armor plates, scraping against the steel plates and producing a piercing metallic scraping sound. It tried to lift the mech, but the Death Angel was too heavy; its legs were nailed to the ground like nails, its reverse-jointed knees bearing the full weight.
The Death Angel's right arm cannon was pressed against the Hungry Angel's chest, and it fired at point-blank range. A series of large-caliber bullets pierced the monster's chest cavity, flew out from its back, and shattered the trunks of several large trees behind it.
The hungry angel's body suddenly leaned back, releasing its arms.
The Angel of Death took a heavy step forward, forcefully pulling the spike from the Angel of Hunger's side, bringing with it a large chunk of flesh. The Angel of Hunger staggered backward, the wound on his chest healing, but at a noticeably slower pace.
The steel behemoth's offensive grew increasingly fierce, and the Angel of Death suddenly launched its second launch!
Flames suddenly burst from the nozzles on its back, and the mech sprang up from the ground, soaring into the sky above the treetops. It flipped in the air, its right arm's cannon pointing downwards, aimed at the head of the Hungry Angel, and fired again!
Bullets rained down from above, hitting the hungry angel's head, shoulders, and wings.
The angel's face was smashed, its golden hair was soaked in blood, one of its blue eyes was blown out, and thick liquid flowed from its eye socket. The hungry angel screamed, its voice as sharp as a knife cutting through glass. It spread its wings, sprang up from the ground, and pounced on the angel of death.
The Death Angel's third ejection was used for evasion. It shifted sideways in the air, and the Hungry Angel's hands suddenly gripped the mech's shoulder armor with tremendous force, tearing off a layer of steel plate. The two behemoths crossed in the air and then crashed to the ground.
The angel of death crashed to the west, and the angel of hunger crashed to the east, creating two large craters fifty meters apart.
With the sound of machinery running, the Angel of Death slowly rose from the pit. A piece of its shoulder armor was torn off, revealing the hydraulic pipes and wires underneath. One of the three spikes on its left arm was broken off, and smoke was still rising from the broken end. The machine gun on its right arm was still spinning, but the barrel was already red-hot.
The Hungry Angel also crawled out of the pit. Its six wings were riddled with bullet holes, and its wing membranes were full of bullet holes. The angel's face was a bloody mess, and the broken mecha was reflected in its blue pupils.
The flowers on his chest were mostly smashed, revealing the grayish-white ribs and the hidden large mouth beneath. Several teeth were broken, and saliva mixed with thick black blood dripped down.
It spread its wings, trying to take off again, but the bullet holes in the wing membranes made its lift insufficient, and it could only glide.
The machine gun struggled to raise its right arm, aiming its machine gun at its enemy...
Simon sat on a tree branch, looking at the mech and the monster. The two broken war machines faced each other in the morning light, steam hissing from the gaps in the armor, and blood dripping from the monster's wounds into the soil.
Which angel will win? He doesn't know.
The angel of death took a heavy step, and the angel of hunger flapped its wings and pounced forward!
The two behemoths charged toward each other at the same time.
