Chapter 39 The Mysterious Visitor
Chapter 39 The Mysterious Visitor
Your enemy is a massive monster blessed by the abyss. It can fly, change its body at will, and possesses an extremely terrifying self-healing ability.
And you are just an ordinary person who knows how to wield a harpoon.
The entire forest was thrown into chaos by the winged monster. Simon, riding on a tree branch, saw seven or eight prey fleeing in a frenzy. The ecology of the first layer of the abyss underwent a huge change, and all of this stemmed from the hungry angel reborn from the ashes.
It was hungry, extremely hungry...
Flesh and blood don't just appear out of nowhere; it needs to eat a lot to make up for the energy deficit, and the prey on the first level becomes its food source.
With its enhanced arms hanging down casually, it snatched a prey from the ground and stuffed it into its large belly mouth to feast.
But the predator was more agile than it had imagined, and its paws missed several times in a row. Its speed of grabbing could not keep up with its speed of eating, and it looked very frustrated.
The hand fell and caught another piece of food, the corpse of one of Theodore's men. The hungry angel tilted its head and disgustedly threw the body away.
The Hungry Angel does not devour humans; this stems from its subconscious mind during its previous life...
Its massive maw opened and closed; it was incredibly hungry. Perhaps it was time to break with convention? Its hand picked up the human corpse again; its hunger had reached its peak. After a moment's hesitation, it stuffed the human corpse into its massive maw, and the monster let out a joyful shriek.
The scent of humans pleased it, and from the moment it accepted the power of the abyss, it completely shed its human parts and became a monster through and through.
Simon silently withdrew his gaze. From now on, even the hungry angels would prey on humans.
"Let's go back."
Simon jumped down from the tree and returned to camp with the supplies and Brienne.
The atmosphere in the camp was heavy. Everyone ate their canned food in silence, waiting for Simon's return.
Upon seeing him, the crowd anxiously surrounded him...
"Hey! How are you? Are you alright?" Klein was carrying the medicine he had just seized.
"Tell us about the Hungry Angel first!" Professor Loris leaned closer to him. "Did the Empire's armored forces defeat that monster?"
Simon shook his head, and the atmosphere instantly turned cold.
"Take a break today. Starting tomorrow, we'll begin building the ladder to the second floor." Simon's gaze swept over the faces etched with exhaustion and fear as he calmly spoke. "We have two more days. Whether it works or not, we have to give it our all."
He knew in his heart that this was just a temporary measure to avoid panic and stabilize morale.
Professor Loris had never seen the large cavity. In fact, the height difference between the first and second levels of the abyss was enormous. Even if they were given a parachute each, let alone a ladder made of vines and wood, they might not be able to land safely on the second level.
"I'm willing to help!" The sinner who had once rebelled against Theodore was the first to speak up, and several other sinners immediately followed suit, joining the effort to repair the ladder.
"Very good, let's rest tonight and start work tomorrow."
After saying that, Simon left casually, took a can of food from the box, and ate it with relish.
Tearing open the tin can, this was the first time he had ever eaten canned food in this world.
The taste was similar to beef, but it had a strong gamey smell, probably because it had been sitting for too long. The meat was tough and hard to chew, but for Simon, who had been eating biscuits for several days, it was no different from a delicacy. He even drank the broth from the can in one gulp.
Seeing his demeanor, everyone relaxed a bit and, under Klein's guidance, went about their own business.
Night fell quickly.
With the campfire burning, Simon and Professor Loris stood guard for the first shift.
He put his backpack in the tent, but to his surprise, Brienne in the birdcage had fallen asleep early, and the energetic girl was now fast asleep.
Back by the campfire, he told Professor Loris about the Hungry Angel:
"The Hungry Angel regenerates faster than any monster we've ever seen. The Death Angel burned half of its body into a skeleton in just over ten seconds. When it emerged from the flames, new flesh had already grown out. The new flesh gushed out like a fountain, weaving into muscles and covering the skeleton. The whole process took less than half a minute."
"It grew new bone spurs, became faster and stronger, and grew even stronger with each serious injury it sustained."
Professor Loris's hands trembled, and his cloudy eyes shone brightly in the spore light, burning with academic fervor.
"This regeneration speed... it's no ordinary abyssal creature!" His dim old eyes shone brighter than ever before, with the excitement of a scholar witnessing a new discovery in a laboratory. "If the Empire can obtain its incriminating flesh, study its regeneration principles, and extract those embryonic stem cells, the Empire will possess an unlimited supply of transplantable organs!"
He took a step forward, his cane digging into the mud, nearly causing him to fall. "Simon, if we can hand over the evidence of its sins to the Empire, they will definitely release us—not just you, not just me, everyone! This kind of flesh is worth more than the lives of a hundred criminals!"
Simon didn't move. He added firewood to the campfire and looked at Professor Loris as if he were a stranger.
"You want me to kill the Hungry Angel?"
"You can do it." Professor Loris's speech quickened, then he suddenly lowered his voice. "You have companions, Klein, Badr, and these sinners. You can persuade them to be your bait, to distract the monster..."
Bang—
Professor Lorris's nose made a dull cracking sound, the kind of thud that comes when cartilage is hit by a fist.
His head snapped back, his cane slipped from his hand and crashed to the ground. He staggered a couple of steps and landed hard on his backside, blood gushing from both nostrils, trickling down his lips and dripping onto his beard.
Simon withdrew his fist, stood there, and did not throw a second punch.
"Barecloth," Simon said calmly. "You use them as bait."
Professor Loris sat on the ground, wiping the blood from his nose with the back of his hand. His eyes were fixed on Simon, and the fervent light in his cloudy eyes had been extinguished.
He realized he had said something nonsensical.
"I'm sorry, I'm so sorry..." His voice was hoarse. "I said things I shouldn't have, and I apologize to you."
"I'll pretend I didn't hear it this time, but if there's a next time, I won't let you off so easily."
Every life is valuable, and if Simon were to casually abandon his companions, he would be no different from the bastards he despises.
But just then, faint footsteps came from afar, and a knee-high fern trembled slightly.
A familiar voice reached Simon's ears:
"He's right, Simon, we have to take down that monster."
